  • it really is very intriguing that while people can spend their night partying and drinking away, getting all wasted, we patriotic Singaporeans sat there talking about politics and our nation's defence mechanism until 3+ am in the morning.

and perhaps coming here, I'm able to come to my conclusion on my identity at last. Home - isnt a fixed place we can point to. Home doesnt have to be where I was born, it doesn't have to be the place where i walked my first steps or spoke my first words. Home is where the family is. Home is, like what the lyrics of the national day song are, 'where my family and my friends grew up with me'. Home is where I am shaped by my experiences. Home is the place which i won't consider thinking of exchanging for any other place in this world. It feels right for me to say to 'go back' to Hong Kong, but being here in the UK made me realised that going 'back' to Singapore means just as much, and even more. I'm glad I was MADE a Singaporean, and not born one, because I'm pretty sure I won't value this citizenship as much if i were.

that wasn't bad for something written on impulse. whoever was in charge of NE must be proud if they see this. haha.

      13. When having dim sum, you rinse your dishes in hot water before you eat.
      14. You ask, "when are you going back to Hong Kong?" instead of "when are you going to Hong Kong?".
      15. You miss the drinks and snacks that you can only get in Hong Kong. (like really really good ice lemon tea and EGG TARTS)

      27. You miss the MTR, and Red Taxis.
      28. You know someone who can get you a good deal on electronics.
      29. Chinese food in other countries doesn't taste right.

      31. You look like you are sixteen.
      32. You wear (or need) glasses.
      33. You say aiya! and wah!.
      34. You’re mum talks to you in Chinese and you reply in English.
      35. It annoys you how shops close at 5pm in other countries and you expect them to be open.
      36. People don't believe that you live on the 28th floor. (or 33rd floor..)
      37. You ask your parents help on one math problem and 2 hours later they're still lecturing. (so true, well thank goodness jc maths got too difficult for my dad to solve)
      38. You eat bak choy.
      39. You wish you could go back to Hong Kong for just 1 day, which you would spend shopping and eating.
      40. You make a list of things to do and buy when you get back.
      41. Everyone thinks you're good at math.
      42. All of your friends ask you to translate whenever they see Chinese characters.
      43. The vast majority of the people related to you wear glasses/contacts.
      44. You think Mcdonalds in other countries is expensive. (IT IS!)
      45. You get homesick when you watch Rush Hour 2
      46. You own a rice cooker.
      47. The furniture in your house never matches the wallpaper, the carpet, the decorations, or any of the rest of the furniture. (HAHA. totally)

You know you're from Singapore when...

    1. You've sung the national anthem since you were in primary 1 and still have no idea what it really means (oops...)
    2. People ask you what you speak at home and you say 'uhh...' (a plethora of languages and dialects?)
    3. You look at someone (when you’re overseas) and a 6th sense tells you that they’re from Singapore too
    4.  Tying a soccer game with Malaysia actually means something significant

  • just got back from hong kong yesterday afternoon, back to the land where it's so cold my nose feels like it's going to drop off. well, that was how my nose felt when i walked out to costcutters to get coins for laundry just now. bumped into Hermit in the kitchen just now, and well i couldnt have felt more relieved that there was at least some other person in the flat with me. and the fact that if there's anything she's just really a door opposite from me. phew.

i was all ready to faint yesterday night when i was trying to bathe and unpack. after a gruelling 12 hour flight, i arrived about half an hour early at 1300, decided that 5 hours is too long a wait for the coach so decided to take the train instead. i must have not been thinking properly, and i cant believe myself to be so adventurous as to find my way back to coventry even after i heard from the person there's no direct train from the airport. but i did anyway. so from heathrow to london paddington, then change to the underground to Euston Square station. then walk to Euston 'overground' station. and took train to Coventry. before taking bus 12 back to campus. so yes i can finally tell people, i've been to London. i've walked 200m of London (from Euston Underground station to the 'overground' station) with my #)%@(%* luggage.

but i'm jetlag-less now (: sober enough to blog. my trip to hk was a good nice break away from the uk greyness. good company, good food, good weather - what more can one ask for? =) spent 2 days in macau as well - it's sure a heaven for gambling addicts. Casinos casinos everywhere! all the decently good hotels have casinos, except one.. where we stayed at. hahaa. had the best portugese egg tarts ever, managed to see several scenes from the Princess hours show as well. visited a cathedral, went to the ruins of the St Paul's cathedral.. well that's about it. haha. didnt do much shopping this time round in hk, but i got TVB series! hahaaha. yay. so happy.

sometimes i just think life goes in circles. very intriguing.

  • INTERESTING DAY I HAD! (: hahaha. though i should be like packing right now, but i just want to blog everything down before i forget.

I went to Birmingham with June today! took the train down, then we spent some time finding Chinatown in the rain, we eventually did, though after ending up at the Birmingham's Frankfurt Christmas Market first. Haha, but we managed to tear ourselves away from all the good-looking food, candies and handicrafts (notice how handicrafts come last) so that we can go see chinatown before dark! and very disappointed we were because es ist sehr klein! ok it is very small! haha. went to Day-In supermarket and saw *GASP* egg roll and peanut candy. didnt buy it of course because i shall get these in hk anyway! haha, much nicer ones. and then we walked out, a few more steps then came to this bakery. OH MY GODDDDDDD. they have BO LO BAO and GAI MEI BAO and sausage bun! FAINTS* and they look SUPER AUTHENTIC! like even better than the crystal jade ones in singapore.

our tour of chinatown took perhaps 5 minutes cos the rest were pretty much restaurants. we went into Bull Ring - a supposedly very big shopping centre and the attraction of Birmingham! I saw really pretty scarves and bags at Accessorize! =D but besides that, the shops were all the same as the High Streets in all parts of the Uk, and it's not that humungous actually. and not that spectacular, but i guess if we're all in need of shopping and is sick of Coventry, the Bullring has everything we need and is only 20 min away (:

then YOOHOO! time for FOOD! hahaha. so we braved the cold to experience for ourselves the CHRISTMAS atmosphere in UK! or in frankfurt. im not too sure. hahaha! but it's REALLY REALLY NICE! so many booths around! they sell a lot of small handicrafts, all handmade, but it's rather expensive. I was really enchanted by the dreamcatchers!! i love dream catchers! they're so pretty. and cute little soft toys. crystals. cute gloves and hats, huge traditional christmas candles. AWESOME (: a really nice festive atmosphere especially around the main parts of the market particularly where the drinks (a.k.a beer) and food booths are. there were SO MANY PEOPLE AROUND. it was really really cool. they had this stick of big block of cheese and pepperoni alternating on it then they dipped it into batter then deep fried. OMG. SUPER NICE. if it wasnt the fact that it'll probably cut another 10 years off my life, i'd have gotten one more. but i think most importantly it's the atmosphere that really makes it so special. Me all bundled up in my winter coat and even with gloves, squeezing through a really joyous crowd of people in front of a drinks booth (do not think of drinks booth in Singapore festivals, they're totally different, not selling can drinks or coke or whatever). AMAZING.

HONG KONG TOMORROW (: or rather the day after. but never mind, i'm flying tomorrow! =)
